Initial Remodeling Considerations

More that ever, today's bathrooms are personal spaces that reflect the lifestyles of their owners. Good bathroom design is a melding of effective space planning and lasting aesthetic appeal.
Slate Hall Bath
This is especially true in an older home where the bathroom is often smaller than ideal. The bathroom must meet practical needs and do it in a way that is pleasing to the user. it's our job as designers to plan the space and to help define a style that the clients feel comfortable with.

Planning begins with a careful assessment of the space with regard to the needs and desires of the client. We look over the bathroom with the client and listen to what they like about it and what they don't like about it. We listen to any ideas they have about what they want in the new bathroom. We find it helpful to draw a measured floor plan of the bathroom as it is, indicating the walls, doorways, windows, cabinetry and plumbing fixtures. Drawing the floor plan to scale acts as a reality check and lets us know what we really have to work with.

Style is a matter of giving some personality and grace to what is, after all, a very utilitarian space. More than ever, style has become an expression of personal taste and we thoroughly enjoy exploring the subject with our clients. One thing leads to another in the creative process and with persistence, diverse shapes and textures are brought together into a unified whole.
